DESCRIPTION:Insider research can provide valuable access to contextual know
ledge\, shared language and professional understanding\, while also raisin
g methodological questions about familiarity\, assumptions and researcher
positionality. This short video reflects on these issues through a qualita
tive doctoral study exploring Grade 5 teachers’ perceptions and use of e
-learning pedagogies in public primary schools in Bisha\, Saudi Arabia.\n\
nThe study adopted an interpretivist\, bounded case study approach with et
hnographic and phenomenological sensitivity. Data were generated across th
ree urban public primary schools through biographical narrative interviews
with twelve Grade 5 teachers\, documentary analysis\, and a reflexive res
earch journal. The researcher’s previous professional experience as a pr
imary school teacher in the same regional context created a distinctive in
sider position within the research setting.\n\nRather than treating inside
r status as a fixed advantage or limitation\, the study conceptualises pos
itionality as relational and continually negotiated. Shared cultural\, lin
guistic and professional knowledge supported access\, rapport and contextu
al understanding. At the same time\, familiarity required ongoing attentio
n to assumptions and to the distinction between participants’ accounts a
nd the researcher’s prior knowledge and experience.\n\nReflexive journal
ling provided an important means of documenting these methodological tensi
ons throughout data generation and analysis. It supported critical reflect
ion on how researcher experience\, relationships and emerging interpretati
ons shaped the research process.\n\nThe video argues that insider research
is better understood as an ongoing process of positional negotiation rath
er than a simple insider–outsider binary. It highlights reflexivity as a
practical and analytical resource for making researcher positioning visib
le and methodologically productive in culturally situated qualitative rese
 arch.
