DESCRIPTION:This study examines the effects of cyclones on life satisfactio
n in Australia\, exploiting local exposure to cyclones as a natural experi
ment to address the limited causal evidence in the existing literature. Us
ing 24 years of nationally representative panel data and individual fixed-
effects models\, we find that only the most severe Category 5 events—par
ticularly those occurring in close proximity to individuals’ residences
—have statistically significant and economically meaningful negative eff
ects on overall life satisfaction\, as well as on satisfaction with commun
ity and health. Moreover\, these severe cyclones generate persistent or de
layed adverse effects on satisfaction with employment opportunities\, neig
 hbourhood\, community\, and personal safety. Back-of-the-envelope calculat
ions indicate that the estimated effects of Category 5 cyclone exposure wi
thin 100 km of one’s residence are equivalent to an income loss of appro
ximately 1.4% to 6.5%\, depending on the life satisfaction domain consider
ed. The negative impacts are most pronounced among males\, younger individ
uals\, and those without prior residential insurance coverage\, underscori
ng the importance of insurance in mitigating the adverse effects of natura
 l disasters on life satisfaction.
