DESCRIPTION:Traditional methods for making estimates from surveys rely on r
 andom (probability) samples and high response rates. As the costs of such 
 surveys increase and as response rates decrease\, the principles on which 
 traditional methods are based are becoming harder to justify for samples f
 or which the selection and response mechanisms are unknown (or unknowable)
 . A range of statistical techniques have been developed for these situatio
 ns\, to try and model the selection mechanisms and enable estimates and in
 ferences with respect to the target population. \n\nThis workshop will giv
 e practical advice and examples on design\, weighting and estimation for c
 ontemporary surveys that do not meet traditional probability methods assum
 ptions. Topics covered will include the following: \n  * Design considerat
 ions including sample composition\, questionnaire items\, data quality and
  benchmarks\; \n  * Methods for estimating base weights\, making use of a 
 probability reference sample if one is available\; \n  * Calibration to be
 nchmarks\; and \n  * Bias and variance assessment.
